بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّىٰ(1)
He frowned and then turned away(1)
أَن جاءَهُ الأَعمىٰ(2)
from a blind man who had come up to him.(2)
وَما يُدريكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكّىٰ(3)
You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself,(3)
أَو يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكرىٰ(4)
or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him.(4)
أَمّا مَنِ استَغنىٰ(5)
Yet you pay attention(5)
فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدّىٰ(6)
to a rich man,(6)
وَما عَلَيكَ أَلّا يَزَّكّىٰ(7)
though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself.(7)
وَأَمّا مَن جاءَكَ يَسعىٰ(8)
As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance).(8)
وَهُوَ يَخشىٰ(9)
and who has fear of God,(9)
فَأَنتَ عَنهُ تَلَهّىٰ(10)
you ignore him.(10)
كَلّا إِنَّها تَذكِرَةٌ(11)
These verses are a reminder(11)
فَمَن شاءَ ذَكَرَهُ(12)
so let those who want to follow its guidance do so.(12)
فى صُحُفٍ مُكَرَّمَةٍ(13)
(This Quran) is also recorded in honorable books,(13)
مَرفوعَةٍ مُطَهَّرَةٍ(14)
exalted, purified,(14)
بِأَيدى سَفَرَةٍ(15)
by the hands of the noble, virtuous,(15)
كِرامٍ بَرَرَةٍ(16)
and angelic scribes.(16)
قُتِلَ الإِنسٰنُ ما أَكفَرَهُ(17)
May (the disbelieving) human being be condemned! What makes him disbelieve?(17)
مِن أَىِّ شَيءٍ خَلَقَهُ(18)
From what has God created him?(18)
مِن نُطفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ(19)
He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate(19)
ثُمَّ السَّبيلَ يَسَّرَهُ(20)
and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow.(20)
ثُمَّ أَماتَهُ فَأَقبَرَهُ(21)
Then He caused him to die and be buried(21)
ثُمَّ إِذا شاءَ أَنشَرَهُ(22)
and He will resurrect him whenever He wants.(22)
كَلّا لَمّا يَقضِ ما أَمَرَهُ(23)
Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands.(23)
فَليَنظُرِ الإِنسٰنُ إِلىٰ طَعامِهِ(24)
Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food.(24)
أَنّا صَبَبنَا الماءَ صَبًّا(25)
We send down abundant water,(25)
ثُمَّ شَقَقنَا الأَرضَ شَقًّا(26)
and let the earth to break open(26)
فَأَنبَتنا فيها حَبًّا(27)
to yield therein corn,(27)
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضبًا(28)
grapes, vegetables,(28)
وَزَيتونًا وَنَخلًا(29)
olives, dates,(29)
وَحَدائِقَ غُلبًا(30)
thickly planted gardens,(30)
وَفٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا(31)
fruits, and grass.(31)
مَتٰعًا لَكُم وَلِأَنعٰمِكُم(32)
(These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle.(32)
فَإِذا جاءَتِ الصّاخَّةُ(33)
When the trumpet sounds,(33)
يَومَ يَفِرُّ المَرءُ مِن أَخيهِ(34)
it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother,(34)
وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبيهِ(35)
mother, father,(35)
وَصٰحِبَتِهِ وَبَنيهِ(36)
wife and sons,(36)
لِكُلِّ امرِئٍ مِنهُم يَومَئِذٍ شَأنٌ يُغنيهِ(37)
for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns.(37)
وُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ مُسفِرَةٌ(38)
Some faces on that day will be radiant,(38)
ضاحِكَةٌ مُستَبشِرَةٌ(39)
laughing and joyous(39)
وَوُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ عَلَيها غَبَرَةٌ(40)
but others will be gloomy(40)
تَرهَقُها قَتَرَةٌ(41)
and covered by darkness.(41)
أُولٰئِكَ هُمُ الكَفَرَةُ الفَجَرَةُ(42)
These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers.(42)
